With the upcoming free barbecue for SHS alumni and students (Friday, Oct. 14, 2011 from 3:30-5:30 p.m., organizers from Student Council would love to read about memories from Homecomings past. So, if you have some good stories, jot 'em down on this forum. Some might even be read during the barbecue. In the fall of 1964, I served as vice president of Pep Club. Since the president, Diana Arnold, was one of the finalists for Homecoming Queen, I had the honor of counting the votes and carrying the roses at halftime. I remember wearing a quite stylish (?) green suit---jacket and skirt, of course. I also remember getting together for dinner with a bunch of my friends that night and telling them who won the queen. That happened to be Joan Andrews. After divulging the secret, I told them all to act surprised when they heard the official announcement. I'm sure they did cuz the cheering was pretty noisy. They were still collecting outdoor johns from the rural areas for the big Homecoming bonfire. I don't know when that tradition ended. Anyone? Anyone? |
